30 Years of Treating Cancer Locally

May 16, 2018

ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. - May 16, 2018 - Exactly 60 years combined. That’s how long Rae White and Michelle Pratt have been radiation therapists at Roanoke Valley Cancer Center in Roanoke Rapids, NC. In an era where job-hopping is common, White and Pratt have stayed put for 30 years to help local cancer patients get through the toughest time of their lives.

A radiation therapist is responsible for delivering radiation treatment for cancer according to a doctor’s instructions. They make sure the patient is positioned properly and operate the system delivering the radiation.

“I’ve lived here my whole life,” Pratt says. “I went away for college and came back to help my community, who are all my friends, relatives and church family. I’ve helped treat generations of cancer patients and I can’t imagine doing anything else.”

White has a similar story. She grew up in Eastern North Carolina and was working in Greenville when she saw the opening to join the Roanoke Rapids cancer center nearly 30 years ago. Both women are proud mothers and grandmothers, and both credit their love of helping people for their longevity.

“Patient care is the strongest driver behind what we do,” says White. “I treat every patient as if they were my family. We get to know every person, their personality, and we can anticipate what problems they may have, like anxiety or fear, and make them more comfortable throughout the process.”

Over the decades, technology has evolved substantially and quickly. White and Pratt have seen technology upgrades over the years and are “blessed” to provide state-of-the-art care in their own community. 21st Century Oncology took ownership of the center in 2013 and saw the implementation of various new radiation machines to treat cancer.

“I’m thrilled that 21st Century Oncology blessed the community with a whole new world of new technology. We have capabilities and technologies that bigger hospitals have, but we are right here in Halifax County,” Pratt says.

Staying with the same organization for 30 years takes heart. As White says, “Cancer is not always rosy. If you don’t love what you do, then you’re in the wrong business.”

Roanoke Valley Cancer Center is located at 212 Smith Church Road, Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870.
